Awliya Allah ( The Saints Of Allah)

Special status of Waliyat

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

There are people among the servants of Allah who are neither prophets nor martyrs; the prophets and martyrs will envy them on the Day of Resurrection for their rank before Allah Most High. People asked: “Tell us, Messenger of Allah, who are they?” He replied: They are people who love one another for the spirit of Allah (i.e. the Qur'an), without having any mutual kinship and giving property to one. I swear by Allah, their faces will glow and they will be (sitting) in (pulpits of) light. They will have no fear (on the Day) when the people will have fear, and they will not grieve when the people will grieve.

He then recited the Qur’anic verse:

Lo! verily the friends of Allah are (those) on whom fear (cometh) not, nor do they grieve?

Awliya (meaning saints, plural of wali), a wali is a saint or a friend of Allah (God). Waliyat (sainthood) is a special rank  given by Allah most high, to his beloved, pious, righteous, truthful servants. There are two types of Awliya Allah, one who is born a wali (saint), the other kind of wali is a righteous servant who has gain the love of Allah by his worship, struggles (nafs, dunya, shaytan, desires), devotion (heart, mind and soul) and by getting closer to Allah by supererogatory prayers, Nawafil.

Allah says in Hadith Qudsi:

My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (voluntary deeds) until I love him, so I become his sense of hearing with which he hears, and his sense of sight with which he sees, and his hand with which he grips, and his leg with which he walks; and if he asks Me, I will give him, and if he asks My Protection, I will protect him

The final decision to be a wali  remains with Allah alone,  even though we do all acts of piety and worship it is only Allah that decide who will be blessed to be his wali, as the Prophet said:
“You must know very well that not a single soul will be put in Paradise depending solely on its good deeds; even myself. One enters into Paradise only if he is blessed with God’s mercy” [Agreed upon].

Abu Huraira (Radi Allah anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allah, Sallalahu alayhi wasallam, said:

Allah the Almighty has said: Whosoever acts with enmity towards a closer servant of mine(wali), I will indeed declare war against him. Nothing endears my servant to me than doing of what I have made obligatory upon him to do. And my servant continues to draw nearer to me with supererogatory (nawafil) prayers so that I shall love him. When I love him, I shall be his hearing with which he hear, his sight with which he shall see, his hands with which he shall hold, and his feet with which he shall walk. And if he asks (something)  of me, I shall surely give it to him, and if he takes refuge in me, I shall certainly grant him it."

At any given time, there are 4000 Awliya living on Earth who are hidden. They don't know one another and are themselves unaware of their excellent state, being hidden from themselves and from mankind. These elite beings are in the realm of 'general saint-ship' (Wilayat aama). The functionaries of Allah's court, involved in the Spiritual Administration are in the realm of 'special saint-ship' (Wilayat khaassa): They are classified in the hierarchy as:

  1. 300  Akhyaar (good ones)- very good 'righteous' and upright servants of Allah.300 whose hearts are like the heart of Adam (alaihis salaam)

2. 40 Abdaal (substitute)- the pegs of the universe, who live physically on the earth and who are 'substituted' (badal) every time one leaves the physical realm. . In a Hadith Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “There will be 40 Abdaal on the soil of Mulk-e-Sham (Syria) till the Day of Judgement. If one dies another will take his place”.

quotes a Hadith Shareef in which the Beloved Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala
Alayhi wa Sallam) declares, “There will always exist 40 persons on the Earth,
each of whom is blessed like Hadrat Ebrahim (Alaihis Salaam). It rains because
of their barakah. Allah appoints another when one of them dies.”

Al-Ghawth - The Pole

Ghawth or Qutb-Al Qutb or Al-Ghawth

There is a Ghawth in every era that holds the highest status amongst all Awliya on earth. No other Wali in this era can reach the status of this Ghawth. He is also called Qutbe-Madar. He will hold the highest seat of Sainthood, which is called Wilayate-Kubra. The entire transactions of the world are under his command. In this authoritative station, he is called "Abd Allah". He has two viceroys, one on the lefted and the other on the right. The left one is called 'Abd al-Malik' and the other 'Abd al-Rabb'. When'Abd Allah' passes away, Abd al-Malik' replaces him and 'Abd al-Rabb' becomes 'Abd al-Malik'.
Another senior Wali is then appointed in the seat of 'Abd al-Rabb'.This procedure continues till Qiyamah.

Examples of Ghawth:

Hazrat Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani r.a. (1077 - 1166) also known as GHAUS AL-AZAM
